Sailing Yacht 'Endora'
King's Ametyst I
'Endora'
was found in Bandol, South France in 1987. She was built in 1964.
Construction is carvel Mahogany on oak frames.
During 1987-1990 she was stripped down to bare wood,
the holes plugged, repainted
and the deck sealed. The engine was replaced, and the old rotten water tank,
fuse board and the battery replaced.
Apparently the previous owner had stopped using the
heads, because if the valves were not shut after flushing the heads, the boat flooded.
During this renovation the loo was raised by 3" to resolve the problem.
Unfortunately during her maiden voyage in the Mediterranean just after the
renovation, the mast exploded into fragments 6" below the winch, and everything
went overboard. The full story of this mis-adventure with the mast, and how the
owner ordered a replacement mast from a well know mast maker in England, and
then with his car and trailer transported his 38' mast all the 850 miles
overland including a 60 mile ferry crossing, to get his mast from England to South of France, was
detailed in the English Practical Boat Owner magazine. Copies of this story can
be obtained from the magazine for a small fee. The title of the story is "The
man with the Mast".
'Endora' had new owners by 2017. She has been lovingly restored including taking the hull back to wood. It was a delight to see 'Endora' in the same english marina as 'Emerald.H.D' during summer 2017.
'Endora' was moored directly behind 'Emerald.H.D.' A historic moment....
